Have you or Someone You Know Been Injured by The Drug RISPERDAL®/ RISPERDAL CONSTA®/ INVEGA®? The Roberts Law Firm, PC Can Help

RISPERDAL® is an atypical antipsychotic drug approved to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and irritability associated with autism.  This drug is also prescribed off-label for treatment of dementia, ADHA, tics, conduct disorder, disruptive behavior disorder, depression, Tourette syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other behavioral conditions.

RISPERDAL® manufactured by Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceutical a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, was approved by the FDA in 1993 for the use of adults and in 2007 for the use of children and adolescents.

RISPERDAL® Side-Effects:

RISPERDAL® has been linked to many serious side effects such as gynecomastia. RISPERDAL® has been found to increase a hormone called prolactin which stimulates breast growth and in some cases experience nipple pain or discharge. Male breast growth, a condition known as gynecomastia, has been seen in boys taking the drug RISPERDAL®. The condition is usually permanent, and in most cases, boys with RISPERDAL®-associated gynecomastia must undergo breast reduction surgery or mastectomy to correct the problem which is a very painful surgery.

RISPERDAL® Lawsuits:

A number of RISPERDAL® lawsuits have been filed around the country that allege Johnson & Johnson and its Janssen unit were aware that RISPERDAL® could cause gynecomastia, but concealed that knowledge from the public. Thus far, most of the lawsuits involving gynecomastia allegations have been individual claims, rather than RISPERDAL® class action lawsuits. In October 2012, Bloomberg News reported that the companies had begun settling some RISPERDAL® gynecomastia lawsuits that were pending in a consolidated litigation in Pennsylvania State Court in Philadelphia.

In 2012, it was also reported that Johnson & Johnson had agreed to settle charges with the federal government over the way it marketed some of its drugs, including RISPERDAL®.  Reported by Law360 on November 8, 2013, Johnson & Johnson settled with the U.S. government for $2.2 billion resolves off label marketing claims over the anti-psychotic drug, but it will have little effect on the product liability litigation where Plaintiff’s attorneys expect the drugmaker to continue the fight against claims that the drug caused health problems in teenage boys.
