What is NuvaRing®? — Guidance From Missouri Prescription Drug Litigation Lawyers
NuvaRing® is a combined contraceptive vaginal ring, manufactured by Organon Pharmaceuticals USA Inc., Organon USA Inc., Organon International Inc., Schering-Plough Corp., and AkzoNobel N.V. NuvaRing® is comprised of ethinyl estradiol (EE) as its estrogen hormone component and etonogestrel as its progestogen hormone component. The FDA approved this birth control drug in October 2001. NuvaRing® works by releasing controlled amounts of ethinyl estradiol (EE) and etonogestrel, which combine to modify female hormones.
Dangerous Side Effects of NuvaRing®
A number of side effects have been associated with the use of the NuvaRing®, including an increased risk of blood clots potentially leading to injuries.
Blood clots, also known as thrombosis, can occur when blood cells clump together in the vein, restricting blood flow. If the blood clot forms in the deep veins of the legs, pelvis or arms, known as deep vein thrombosis, this could severely restrict blood flow to the heart, lungs or brain.
If a blood clot breaks off and travels through the blood stream, it could get lodged near the lung, causing a pulmonary embolism. The pulmonary artery is the main intake valve of blood into the lungs, and if this artery is blocked, the body could suffer from a lack of oxygen.
The use of the NuvaRing® has been found to potentially increase the risk of blood clots, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, which could also lead to an ischemic stroke, heart attack or sudden death.
Litigation Related to NuvaRing®
On August 22, 2008, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPMDL) granted a petition filed by plaintiffs and created a NuvaRing® multidistrict litigation (MDL). All pending NuvaRing® cases and all future NuvaRing® lawsuits filed in the federal court system will be centralized for discovery purposes in the Eastern District of Missouri before Judge Rodney W. Sippel, in the case captioned In re: NuvaRing Products Liability Litigation, No. 08-md-1964, JPML.
