Mirena®

Have You or Someone You Know Been Injured by The Mirena® IUD? The Roberts Law Firm, PC Can Help

What is Mirena®?

Mirena® is intended to prevent pregnancy for up to five years by emitting hormones after implantation and has been viewed by some as a more convenient option for women who find it difficult to take oral contraceptives on a daily basis.

Mirena® is a small T shaped container of flexible plastic that releases continuous doses of the hormone, levonorgesterel, which is commonly found in oral contraceptives. This hormone prevents sperm from entering the uterus by thickening the cervical mucous and thins the lining of the uterus which decreases the chance that a fertilized egg will implant and grow.

Mirena® is manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000.

Mirena® Side-Effects

Mirena® has been linked to a number of serious and potentially life-threatening side-effects including:

  • Perforation of the uterus
  • Perforation of the intestine
  • Obstruction of the intestine
  • Erosion of the IUD into the uterus or adjacent areas
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
  • Migration of the device

Perforation of the uterus is a serious complication and in many cases has to be removed or repaired by surgery. If Mirena® perforates the uterus it can travel into the abdominal cavity and potentially cause life-threatening complications such as intestinal obstruction, organ damage and infections.

Mirena® Lawsuits

Bayer is the subject of numerous lawsuits across the United States alleging Bayer failed to reveal the dangerous side effects of the device, misleading marketing and producing a defective product.

In 2009 the FDA warned Bayer about the marketing of Mirena® and further stated that the advertising included false or misleading presentations and misbranded the drug. Bayer made false claims that the use of Mirena® will result in “increased levels of intimacy, romance and by implication emotional satisfaction”. Bayer falsely insinuated that women who use Mirena® will “look and feel great,” even though women using the product may experience weight gain, back pain, breast pain and acne. Bayer had also been warned for omitting risk information for complications. Failing to disclose the most common side-effects misleadingly suggests the drug or device is safer than it actually is.
